Short Assignment #1: “Conducting an Interview”
You have completed Part 1 of the “Practicing the Genre” section on page 52 of St. Martin’s. You have also discussed in your small groups what you learned about profiles and conducting an interview. Your assignment is to write what you’ve learned about these two topics. I expect your assignment to be in MLA format. You must write a minimum of 500 words. Your typed hard copy of your assignment is due in class on Tuesday 1/16 and to turnitin.com by 1:40 PM.
Short Assignment #2: Considering the Writer’s Role
Based off of the three profiles you’ve read, explain what you’ve learned about the writer’s role in a profile essay. The two roles that have been described in your textbook are participant observer and detached observer. Use the “Analyze and Write” sections of St. Martin’s p. 66 and 73 to help your process of understanding the role of a profiler. Consider the advantages and disadvantages to these approaches to profiling. Which of the two approaches will you probably take? Will you combine the two? I expect your assignment to be in MLA format. You must write a minimum of 500 words. Your typed hard copy of your assignment is due in class on Friday 1/19 and to turnitin.com by 1:40 PM.
Short Assignment #3: Making connections
On page 24 of Ordinary People, Conrad looks at an old picture with his teammates and describes them in his mind as being “On the main street”. Analyze the significance of the main street that Conrad considers. Make a connection between this part of the novel to the article “Deconstructing the Mental Health Crisis: 5 Uneasy Pieces” by Zul Merali and Hymie Anisman. Your response should include concrete details from both texts. It should be a minimum of 500 words in MLA format. Typed hard copy due in class Friday 2/16 and to turnitin.com by the beginning of 7th period.
Short Assignment #5: Problem/Solution Essay Brainstorm
For this assignment you will identify the problem you will address in your proposing a solution essay, and you will explore the solution you are proposing using a scholarly journal you find using the CCC library databases to support your argument. Be sure to also consider how you will synthesize ideas from Ordinary People or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest into your essay. You must properly cite your source (integrated golden lines in the assignment as well as provide a works cited page), and I expect your assignment to be in MLA format. You must write a minimum of 500 words (Not including your works cited). Your typed hard copy of your assignment is due in class on Thursday 3/22 and to turnitin.com by 12:40 pm.

Essay #1: Writing a Profile (1500 Word Count)
On page 75 of your St. Martin’s guide the prompt states: Write a profile on an intriguing person, a group of people, a place, or an activity in your community. Observe your subject closely, and then present what you have learned in a way that both informs and engages readers. There are no required sources for this essay, but if you have to learn some background about your subject, you must cite any research you conduct. I expect you to conduct an interview with your subject, and it should be cited in MLA format on a works cited page. Remember to use your interview to inform the impression you develop about your subject, but do not let it dominate the focus of your essay.
As we explore the thematic focus of this course (mental illness and the resiliency of the human spirit), the subject of your profile essay should be someone who has had to overcome adversity. You do not have to profile someone with a mental illness. Our goal is to use this first essay as proof that the human spirit can overcome even the most difficult of odds. We will use our profiles as reminders of resiliency throughout the semester as we explore different texts whose authors and/or characters are affected by mental illness in some capacity. The subject you select should be someone or something you will be able to observe and come in close contact with throughout the process of writing this essay. Keep in mind your role as an observer. You will NOT be profiling a celebrity. You may NOT use a pre-existing essay.
Essay #2 Directions:Causal Analysis (1500 Word Count)
“But those who do--even medical personnel--often avoid seeking help because of a self, cultural/social, or structural stigma. The good news is that various forms of stigma related to mental illness are dissipating, albeit modestly, and more people have been seeking help” (Merali and Anisman).
Until recently, mental illness was a topic widely viewed as shameful or embarrassing for those affected by it. Your essay will focus on what has caused a shift in the way mental illness is perceived in society. Mental illness is often viewed as an obstacle that affects not only a person with an illness but those the person comes in contact with as well. Since mental illness carries less of a stigma than it has in previous years, what are the effects on the relationships among those affected by mental illness? Consider relationships of the characters in Ordinary People and discuss how they represent a broad view of the effects that are derived from a more modern perspective on this topic. You will be required to include research from 5 credible sources. Ordinary People is a required source, but it will not count towards your 5 credible source requirement.
Essay #3: Proposing a Solution (2000 Word Count)
In this essay you will propose a solution to a problem associated with mental illness that we have discussed in class or have read about in one of our texts. You will research this problem and provide a clear analysis of it followed by a clearly explained and supported solution. You will refer to characters or events from Ordinary People or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but this will not count toward your 5 sources. You will be required to find a minimum of 5 scholarly journals from CCC’s library databases.
